AN ANALYSIS ON THE FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN ADELE’S SONG LYRICS OF “21” ALBUM

Literature is human being’s creation or expression of experiences, thoughts, feelings, ideas, by using a language as a medium, because its sensuous quality keeps literature from becoming completely abstract, ideal or spiritual. Song as one of human expression is a short poem or number of verses set of music intended to be sung by the singer. In a song made up of lyric. The authors of song shown their style through the lyrics that they make because every composer has different style from others. This study focused on figurative languages used in Adele’s song lyrics in “21” album which released in 2011. There are two statements of the problems in this study. Those are: 1) What kinds of figurative languages are found in Adele’s song lyrics of “21” album? (2) What are the contextual meanings on the figurative language in Adele’s song lyrics of “21” album? This research used qualitative research design because no treatment or control groups are served as what the experimental research did. Moreover, objective approach employed because the analysis related to the literary work itself without studying the author’s life. The research objects are six of Adele’s song lyrics. Based on the analysis and discussion of findings, it was found that the figurative languages used in Adele’s song lyrics are personification, hyperbole, euphemism, metonymy, metaphor, simile, synecdoche, litotes, allegory, and symbol. The contextual meanings of those songs are the stories about the love of a woman to her spouse. Heart pain, pleasure, and happiness are expressed in the song.
