Abstract

Achillea tomentosa (Asteraceae) is a small herb from the dry grassland in alpine valleys. The essential oil composition from the flower heads of plants collected in the Val Venosta (Italy) has been analyzed. 1,8-Cineol (56.1 %) and α-pinene (15.3 %) were the main compounds of the essential oil. Further minor compounds were linalool (4.7 %), α-terpineol (3.3 %), β-pinene (2.4 %) and terpinen-4-ol (2.3 %). Although the present A. tomentosa oil contained widely occurring compounds as 1,8-cineole and α-pinene, it can be distinguished from the oils of most closely related Achillea species.
