Abstract

The 1906 storm and flood at Mells is an example of an extreme event. It caused much damage in the local area and wider district. By using a variety of approaches the peak discharge was estimated to be about 100 cumecs, and its rarity to be about 500–700 years. Together with these results an analysis of the July 1968 flood and an estimate of bankfull flow allowed a flood frequency estimate to be produced. In terms of flood sizes and growth rate with flood rarity, it compared well with measurements taken at a gauging station further downstream.
