An improved TCP congestion control algorithm in LTE networks

Abstract

This paper presents an improved congestion control algorithm of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), TCP WDL (Westwood LTE). Traditional TCP will decrease congestion window regardless the reason of packet loss in wireless links. The primary purpose of TCP WDL is to enhance TCP performance in Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks by being able to distinguish the random packet losses from the congestion packet losses. TCP WDL combines Bandwidth Estimation (BE) strategy with Rate Estimation (RE) strategy to calculate available bandwidth. In congestion avoidance phase, WDL divides the network congestion grades to estimate congestion degree based on throughput. This paper compares its performance with NewReno and Westwood by network simulator ns-3.24. The simulation results show that TCP WDL achieves higher throughput and fairness is comparable to NewReno and Westwood in LTE networks.
