Abstract
This paper describes temperate agroforestry systems in New Zealand, wherein a variety of agroforestry systems are used and evaluated. Currently, wide spaced poplar and willow for soil erosion management combined with livestock production is the most commonly used system and will continue to be implemented. Research on management of these systems is now focused on silvicultural husbandry so that the twin objectives of soil erosion management and livestock production are optimized. After extensive research on radiata pine agroforestry systems, poor timber quality and low livestock production within these systems has resulted in plantation forestry being the preferred system.
