Abstract

After the Great Sumatra Earthquake in 2004 and its devastating consequences, the region of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, was subject to extended geoscientific research. The map of the Banda Aceh region indicates the locations chosen for shear wave reflection seismic profiling and yields corresponding velocities. Critical soil conditions were detected for areas near the coastline and between the Krueng Aceh River and the dextral strike-slip Great Sumatra Fault. The only stable region seems to be located close to the military airport, which lies in the transition to pyroclastic deposits. Lampasi Engking is immediately located at the Great Sumatra Fault, which is considered as dextral strike-slip fault. From this location arises the strong backscattering that dominates the SE lower corner of the seismic section. Site Japakeh is short distance from the Great Sumatra Fault, the large dextral strike-slip fault in the region.
