Abstract

Globally, the upgrade of informal settlements is no \nlonger considered a marginal issue. Contributions to \nthe discourse in terms of policy reviews and strategies \nemanate from various sectors concerned with the socioeconomic, \nspatial and political consequences of such \nupgrade. is feature investigates the nuances in this \ndiscourse and how work undertaken by architectural \nprofessionals in South Africa has served to support particular perspectives on informal-settlement upgrade. \n e argument is forwarded that the architectural \nprofession could make a positive contribution to the issue \nby undertaking a critical stance on the role informal \nsettlements play in emergent urban processes, thereby \nengaging at a meaningful level of transformation.
