History Education and Global Citizenship Education

Abstract

We examine the relationship between history education and global citizenship education. We discuss different understandings of this relation but we focus on analysing possible ways in which history education can contribute towards global citizenship education. Pedagogically, we propose the work with controversial issues as a way to educate the global citizenry. Two different approaches to controversial issues are presented and for each of them examples are provided. We then offer a precise account of aspects of history education that could be taught and evaluated if global citizenship is understood as purpose. We conclude by identifying areas for future inquiry.
