Publisher Summary This chapter describes traditional or “Fisharian” quantitative genetics and uses it as a framework to discuss some of the modifications of this theory that are necessary when applying the theory to a metapopulation rather than a single panmictic population. It then discusses the interpretation of metapopulation quantitative genetics. Whereas traditional or Fisherian quantitative genetics is naturally related to measuring the response to selection, metapopulation quantitative genetics is more naturally related to the differentiation of populations and, as a consequence, speciation.
