Abstract
The procedure specified in acceptance testing of pozzolans for chemical analysis for major oxides is more involved and most costly than the procedure used for such analyses in the acceptance testing of portland cement. In order to investigate the simplification of the procedure for testing pozzolans, four pozzolans were evaluated. The methods used were: The prescribed method, which involves fusing the sample and then determining the major oxides by the referee procedure for portland cement; A method which consists of pretreating the sample as in first, determining the amount of SiO2 by the referee procedure but omitting the second evaporation, and determining the remaining constituents by the optional procedure for portland cement; and the third which involves igniting the sample and determining the constituents by the optional procedure for portland cement.
