Almost all direct energy used during field operations is consumed by an engine during operation of tractors or selfpropelled equipment such as combines, forage harvesters, or sprayers. Transmitting engine power as efficiently as possible for the task (pulling implements through soil, cutting plants, pumping, etc.) has significant effects on the amount of energy being used.
