It is generally acknowledged that natural ventilation plays one of significant roles in building energy conservation and indoor environment improvement. This study aims to investigate the natural ventilation of ancient dwellings in China. A Huizhou traditional dwelling is selected for evaluating its natural ventilation performance in summer by means of field measurement. According to the analysis, Huizhou traditional dwellings has good natural ventilation in summer, which is mainly attributed to the patio. Wind force plays a leading role during daytime, however, buoyancy force is the primary driving forces for natural ventilation at night. Therefore, when all doors and windows are opened during the daytime, the air change rate of the patio, hall and bedroom is 39.04 ach (air changes per hour), 15.54 ach and 10.88 ach respectively. But the air change rate of the hall and bedroom is decreased to 1.00 ach and 0.65 ach respectively for the closing of all doors and windows at night, which can also meet the minimum air change rate of residential buildings in China.
