Leadership behavior of principals of colleges of teacher education

Abstract

Leadership is one of the most complex human behaviors. Scholars have viewed leadership differently and practically leadership qualities are acquired by the leaders on the basis of several factors. Leader behaviors tend to explain more variance in leadership effectiveness than leader traits. Modern leaders are required to be flexible and change oriented in order to carry the work force with them and achieve the goals of organization. The behavioral leadership placed emphasis on the actions of the leader. It is better at describing transactional leadership than transformational leadership styles. Behavioral leadership studies focused on leader traits and behaviors which influence leadership effectiveness. The subject of leadership behavior of organizational leaders is widely discussed and debated all over the world since the academic environment is affected by various factors related to organizational development and professional advancement. Scholars have emphasized the need for development of academic leadership in the age of knowledge management. The educational institutions need to bridge the gap between the theory and practice with respect to leadership behavior changes and modifications in modern times. In the age of globalization of education, the academic leaders face series of challenges. Professional development programmes for educational leaders relative to the specific leadership practices would create a collaborative culture of professional learning communities in modern educational institutions.
