Abstract

Numerous advantages like compact size, higher efficiency, long life etc. make LEDs a popular illumination source. Use of LED lamps results in higher energy savings. But for the proper functioning of the LED lamp, the operating temperature must be with in the thermal limits of the lamp. For achieving the same, use of heat sinks are employed. Many types heat sinks with distinct advantages are implemented depending on the working conditions and the surroundings where the lamp is employed. This paper presents the thermal analysis of honeycomb heat sink used for high power LED applications in street lighting. Three structure viz. single cell, two cell and three cell honeycomb heat sink for high power LED lamps are modelled in Solidworks. The thermal analysis of the same is performed in ANSYS software. Better configuration out of the three models is selected based on the results of thermal analysis and considering the amount and cost of the material of the heat sink. A properly designed heat sink will increase the life and reliability of the LED lamp.
