Abstract
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been widely studied for decades due to their superior characteristics and promising applications. However, multi-hop WSNs suffer from serious collisions caused by hidden terminals, resulting in the decline of network performance and lifetime. Contention-free media access control (MAC) protocols can strictly avoid conflicts through channel resource partitioning. In this paper, we investigate MAC protocols using the code division multiple access (CDMA) mechanism to resolve collision problems in WSNs. We perform a comparative study of existing CDMA-based protocols and evaluate their performance through theoretical analyses and simulation results. The remaining challenges and future works are also presented. We develop a novel MAC protocol that combines CDMA with carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA).
