Storytelling that Links the Present to the Past

Hopkins and Josserand provide a collection of stories told by the contemporary Maya of southern Mexico.  Steeped in ancient history as well as colonial influences, these stories offer a unique perspective into the language and culture of the Chol Maya.  As linguists, the authors pay special attention to the structure of the narrative form and how it reflects general features and values associated with the best storytelling.  The folktales collected in this volume not only provide useful insights into Chol morality, knowledge, and values, but transports the reader into the homes and lives of the storytellers.
