Abstract
This paper discusses the development of a prototype expert system using a commercially available expert system shell. The system is to be used for the selection of highway bridge foundations. The rule based system takes into consideration both theoretical and practical requirements for foundation type selection. Program structure and performance, knowledge acquisition, and the software features are all discussed. Potential users include students and junior engineers.
