Abstract
The object of this paper is to amplify and bring together matter contained in previous discussions of this subject, and to propose a more rational method of solution. Unfortunately, the experimental data presented are not entirely conclusive, and it is hoped that this paper may inspire the making of further experiments, and induce other investigators to submit additional data for comparison. Among the earliest data which gained the notice and, for a long time, the approval of the engineering profession are the observations of rainfall and run-off made from gaugings in the sewers of London, England, in 1854, by Roe, Bidder, and Bazalgette, and interpreted by Hawksley.
