Abstract

Excellent mechanical properties and good corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steels may become affected by microstructural changes occurring as a result of welding followed by heat treatment. An investigation was carried out on welded AISI 316L steel joints produced by manual electric arc welding technique and then submitted to post-weld heat treatment. Microstructural analysis of the base metal, heat-affected zone, and the weld metal was carried out by means of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The presence of delta ferrite, sigma phase and nonmetallic inclusions was observed in the weld metal microstructure.
