Politeness in V for Vendetta Movie Script: Functions and Types

One form of verbal communication is awritten discourse. Discourse type is the result of disclosure of the idea or the idea of speaker. One of the forms of discourse ismoviescript. Movie script is an example of the writing contained in the discourse of the dialogue of the character. In the dialog between characters in a movie scriptaspect of politeness language can be researched.Therefore, the researcher did research on functions and types politeness in V for Vendettamovie script. Politeness is one of the aspects of language that native speakers can improve emotional intelligence. Because in communication, speakers and addressees are not only required to convey the truth, but must remain committed to maintain harmonious relations. Harmony relationship speaker between hearers is maintained if each participant ways said not to embarrass each other. Morever, the researcher conducts this research by using qualitative approach. Thus, the researcher used descriptive method in this research. The study is descriptive because it tries to describe function and types politeness in movie script. The data of the research are the utterances, which contains politeness function, and finding negative n positive politeness. The researcher found that there are illocution functions and various social purposes including, advising, requesting, recommending, offering, raising and stating. And then the existence of the principle of modesty, which is 6 maxim they are tack maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, agreement maxim, modesty maxim and sympathy maxim. Encourage politeness functions in order to avoid social conflict and friendly relations. Because in conversations contained in the movie scrip has been supporting friendly relations and to avoid social conflict, the researcher found the type of positive politeness that often arise in the conversation. Based on the result, it is clear that function of politeness is to direct more of the conversation in order to achieve the friendly relations and avoid social conflict. Then the desired result of a conversation between the speaker and the hearer is positive politeness types. Ultimately the goal and desired results have been achieved speaker and hearer.
