Since a panhead has been known as a main aerodynamic noise source of a pantograph on a Shinkansen train, reduction of aerodynamic noise of the panhead itself has been extensively studied. However, modification of the panhead shape to reduce its aerodynamic noise often has a small effect on the reduction of the whole pantograph aerodynamic noise. By some wind tunnel tests, aerodynamic interaction between the panhead and the pantograph frame proved to have a large influence upon the aerodynamic noise of the pantograph. Therefore, not only modification of the panhead shape but also improvement of the pantograph frame in order to decrease the aerodynamic interaction is necessary for sufficient aerodynamic noise reduction of the pantograph.
