Abstract
This chapter discusses the purpose, principle of operation, specifications, and applications of a breast biopsy system. The breast biopsy system is used to obtain a small amount of breast tissue from a suspicious area in the breast for diagnostic purposes. Breast biopsy is a procedure to establish or negate the presence of cancerous cells in the breast. There are several procedures for performing breast biopsy for obtaining a tissue sample from the breast. The commonly used procedures for performing breast biopsy are fine-needle aspiration biopsy, core needle biopsy, image-guided biopsy, stereotactic biopsy, ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy, magnetic resonance imaging-guided core needle biopsy, and vacuum-assisted biopsy. The breast biopsy system finds applications in the radiotherapy departments and is intended to provide breast tissue for histological examination for diagnosing any abnormality in the breast.
