Abstract

The relationship between the amplitude of a lock-in oscillation and the vortex street behind the cylinder in a crossflow was studied experimentally. The experiment, which controlled the vortex street using a separation plate behind the cylinder, showed that the amplitude of the lock-in oscillation was determined not by the flow velocity but by the vortex street. The experiment also showed that the amplitude of the lock-in oscillation qualitatively agrees with the prediction by our model that is based on the phase of the force induced by vortices.
