Foregrounding analysis in Lenka’s lyrics

Abstract
This paper is talking about foregrounding on Lenka’s lyrics. The topic is taken to know how important the styles as a strategy of the author for making the lyrics more aesthetic. However, the styles in this paper focus on figurative language. In these lyrics, the researcher interested to analyze the style that used in the lyrics and the style that support theme with the lyrics, because the researcher thinks several lyrics of Lenka are having literary value.
To find out the style and the style that support themes, the researcher uses stylistic analysis. Stylistics is the study of language style. Moreover, the researcher provides two statement problems in this research. They are; (1) What style used by Lenka in making her lyrics foreground, and (2) How styles used by Lenka support themes in her lyrics.
In answering those two problems above, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative analysis method to describe and to analyze the data are taken from the Lenka’s lyrics. This research is analyzed based on the theory of Leech about stylistic and supporting theory from Johnson about figurative language.
In analyzing data, the researcher reads and learns more carefully the data that is taken from each word, phrases, clauses and sentence in the lyrics, to get the kinds of style and the style that support theme is showed by those stanzas and lines in the lyrics. Then, in 10 titles of song lyrics, the researcher found 5 style namely: 25 metaphors, 16 personifications, 8 similes, 2 hyperbolas, and 3 ironies.
The conclusion directly refers to two question, first to find the style used by Lenka in making her lyrics foreground and the second to find the style that support the theme. In each title of the song lyrics by Lenka, the researcher realize that metaphor which dominant in the lyrics and Definitely, the content of its lyric supported its theme, in case the content must contains whether sentence, phrase or word in which those are style. Therefore, the styles support the theme of each lyric.
