Abstract

With the increasing proportion of elderly people in Western Societies there is a growing need for health professionals to seek ways to improve the quality of care of older people. Kingston Centre is a large aged care centre offering specialised services for older people in the community. It fonns part of the Southern Health Care Network and its main emphasis of care is rehabilitation with the aim of returning patients to their homes, with support from community services. Additionally it provides pennanent and temporary residential accommodation for approximately 320 older people. It is predicted that by the year 2010 there will be a 100 per cent increase in the number of people over the age of eighty in the South-Eastern Region of Melbourne alone.
