Abstract
We examined sevenenterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains whichproduced colonization factor antigen I(CFA/I). Fourofthese strains werefromSouth Africa (three serotype 078:H12 andoneserotype 063:H-), onewasfromEthiopia (078:H12), andtwowerefromBangladesh (078:H11 and078:H12). Plasmids coding forCFA/Iweremobilized fromsixofthese strains byusing resistance or enterotoxin factors. Noplasmid wasmobilized fromtheserotype 078:H12 Bangladesh strain. Thetransconjugants obtained fromcrosses withthe078strains also produced heat-stable enterotoxin (ST), andadditional investigations showed thatCFA/IandST werecodedforbyasingle non-autotransferring plasmid. Theseplasmids werefertility inhibition negative, didnotrestrict anyofthe coliphages withwhichtheyweretested, andwereincompatible witheachother. Fourhadmolecular weights ofapproximately 60x 106, andonehadamolecular weight of52x106. Liketheother CFA/Iplasmids, theCFA/Iplasmid transferred fromthe063:H-strain codedforST,butthis plasmid also codedforheat-labile enterotoxin. Inmostother respects theproperties ofthis plasmid weresimilar to those oftheCFA/I-ST plasmids previously described. Themolecular weight of this plasmid was65x 106. TheIncTR-factor Rtslwasmarkedwithatransposon fortetracycline resistance andthentransferred into thetwoBangladesh wild-type strains. Plasmids whichcodedfortetracycline resistance, CFA/I,andSTwere transferred fromthese strains. Theseplasmids wereincompatible withRtsland withtheCFA/I-ST plasmids described aboveandwererecombinants between RtslandaCFA/I-ST plasmid. Their properties arealso described. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains producediarrheal disease inbothhumansandanimalsbycolonizing thesmall intestines andproducing enterotoxins. Hairlike surface structures
