Abstract

The paper explains the need to introduce inteligent transport systems at the end of the 20 century. Basic characteristics and advantages are presented, provided by the telematics in traffic. The development of intelligent transport systems is presented through the significance wich the international community is giving them by funding the development projects. The benefits of implementing telematics in urban public transport are given using as example the city of Helsinki.
