Abstract

The current climate in education worldwide is focused on understanding how students learn and the factors that contribute to improving this. Numerous theories have been proposed with the majority centred around the quality of teaching delivered. Teachers and the strategies they employ can positively influence the quality of learning. However, to understand how teachers can impact the quality of learning in the music classroom environment, the link with student engagement needs to be considered. My motivation in conducting this study is to find how to engage Year 7 boys in music. This paper investigates the nature of student engagement; the factors that contribute to this; and the impact it may have on student achievement.
