Abstract

Abstract The Paleogene stratigraphy of the Carpathian mountains is particularly complex because deposition of flysch in the region began in the lower Cretaceous, and during the Paleogene was predominant. Four principal facies of Paleogene formations are present. The foreland non-flysch facies, not folded, transgressive, and incomplete in sequence, lies on the north margin. In turn southward are the zone of Paleogene flysch, strongly folded and closely related to that of the Cretaceous; the Paleogene of the central western part of the region, transgressive upon a folded substratum (particularly the middle Cretaceous), but with flysch facies predominant; and the facies in Hungary and southern Slovakia that is neither folded nor flysch.
