SYSTEMIC RACISM IN CRASH THE MOVIE

Racism still occurs in this modern world nowadays. One of the bad consequences that are caused by racism is apartheid policy in South Africa which victimized many innocent people. It is not only prejudice and stereotype that constructs racism, like most people thought. Therefore, it is required to examine racism with up-to-date approach to know what constructs racism. The media to be examined is movie, Crash, that was directed by Paul Haggis in 2004. To be able to get a full analysis relating to racism in this movie, oppression theory, created by Joe R. Feagin, was used. Besides that, analyzing the characteristics of the movie is also chosen as another method in this research. It is discovered that racism practices in the movie is not only influenced by stereotype and prejudice. There is a well-structured system, that is systemic racism, which causes oppression since many centuries ago resulting in the construction of today’s racism practices in the USA. The conclusion of this research is that racism in the modern day is systemic which was started centuries ago. In order to reduce and maybe to abolish racism, hard work is needed.
