Abstract

Single-mode fibers are suitable for high bandwidth transmission because of the absence of intermodal dispersion and the possibility of utilizing the very small chromatic dispersion near the minimum dispersion wavelength λ0. This paper compares the chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion due to core ellipticity and stress birefringence. We show that for given fiber and source parameters, there is an optimum input pulse that yields maximum transmission bandwidth, and we discuss the relative importance of polarization mode dispersion vs chromatic dispersion.
