Abstract

Introduction: Osteocalcin is a key protein found in the bone and  play  and play an  important role in regulating the glucose metabolism during  menopause. The aim of this study was  to   find out  the relationship between serum Osteocalcin level and Glucose, and insulin resistance in menopausal diabetic women.   Material and methods :65 menopausal with type-2 diabetes and 65 healthy menopausal women matched by age and BMI were chosen as control group. The women in case and control were free of cardiovascular, bone disease and thyroid disorders. The serum level of osteocalcin, fasting blood glucose ,insulin ,HOMA- IR, Cholesterol,Triglyceride.HDL-cholestrol and LDL-cholestrol were measured.  Results: The result of this study showed there is not any significant difference regarding body mass index( BMI),age ,duration of menopauseal period, insulin, cholesterol,HDL and LDL.The diabetic group had significantly higher fasting blood glucose,HOMA-IR,and triglyceride than control group.  Serum Osteocalcin level was significantly lower in diabetic group.Serum osteocalcin was significantly correlated with glucose.Serum osteoclacin did not have any correlation with insulin.HOMA-IR and lipid profile.   Conclusion: Osteocalcin has a protective function against the insulin resistance and diabetes in postmenopausal women.
