Abstract

The viscosity-average molecular weight decreases rapidly with irradiation up to 10 Mr but more slowly above 10 Mr. The solubility in an 80% aqueous solution of formic acid changes slightly with irradiation up to 10 Mr but increases rapidly from 1O to 110 Mr. In the lower range of irradiation doses, the melting point, mechanical proper ties, and solvent resistance increase slightly by the formation of crosslinkages. The changes in properties by irradiation in 10/sup -2/ mm Hg air and 760 mm Hg N/sub 2/ gas after removing air to 10/sup -2/ mm Hg are nearly the same, but those in 760 mm Hg air are greater than in 10/sup - 2/ mm Hg air. The formation of crosslinkages and main-chain scissions increases with irradiation in the oxygen atmosphere. (OID)
