Die Degradation von Basalmembran und extrazellulärer Matrix ist eine Voraussetzung für die Invasion und Metastasierung von Tumorzellen. Die dazu erforderliche Proteolyse erfolgt unter anderem durch Matrixmetalloproteinasen und ist streng kontrolliert durch spezifische endogene Proteaseinhibitoren. Dieser Review fasst den gegenwärtigen Stand der Erkenntnisse über die Rolle der Matrixmetalloproteinasen im Wachstum, der Invasion und Metastasierung zusammen und fokussiert sich auf die Bedeutung der Matrixmetalloproteinasen bei gastrointestinalen Tumoren.
