Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present the major design issues addressed in the design of Terminal Separation (Replace) and I-880 Reconstruction. To address these issues Caltrans set out to combine knowledge gained from structure behavior in the Loma Prieta Earthquake and on-going laboratory testing at Universities throughout California. The result is a design criteria that attempts to ensure the structure will remain serviceable following the maximum credible earthquake. The design criteria has been reviewed by a Seismic Safety Review Panel consisting of prominent licensed Structural Engineers, University Professors and Soils Experts in California. It is anticipated that this criteria will be adopted as standard design practice for 'Lifeline' Structures.
