Abstract

South of the gneissic Zone Axiale (Axial Zone), the Palaeozoic Hercynian nappe pile of Montagne Noire shows a trend of E-NE folds, with axial planar cleavage and horizontal stretching lineation deforming the earlier nappe structures and particularly the basal thrusts of each nappe unit. These folds are the result of a general post-nappe Hercynian N-S shortening which resulted as well in the antiformal doming of the gneissic Axial Zone. A structural study focusing on shear criteria shows that the E-W to ENE trending stretching lineation contemporaneous with the F2 folding is the result of a bulk coaxial deformation during a N-S shortening and cannot be related to a large ductile dextral or sinistral strike-slip fault.
