Abstract
This abstract refers to the effect that record-high lake levels, shoreline erosion, and the decline of the steel industry are having on present and future plans for shoreline development at the southern end of Lake Michigan. It focuses on plans which are currently being developed for the Lake Michigan shoreline within the boundaries of the states of Illinois and Indiana at the southern tip of the lake. Reference is made to the history of lake levels during the last two thousand years, and the factors that have led to the current record-high levels being experienced today. Also referred to is shoreline development in Northwest Indiana where over half of the shoreline is controlled by the steel industry.
