Seismic Risk Analysis Based on Spectral Characteristics of Ground Motions

Abstract

This paper presents two different approaches to construct the seismic response spectrum from a probabilistic point of view. One is the uniform hazard response spectrum, the other is the stochastic response spectrum. For this purpose, two types of ground motion model were developed based on data obtained from the Taiwan area. Hazard analysis was first performed for spectral accelerations at several frequencies. The spectral shape was determined by selecting the amplitude at each frequency that has 10 -4 annual probability of exceedance. Using the maximum response of a single-degree-of-freedom linear system and the proposed Fourier amplitude ground motion model, the non-exceedance probability of the earthquake response spectrum for a site within a given lifetime can also be calculated. The important ground motion parameters affecting the seismic hazard were discussed.
