Abstract
Abstract This chapter focuses on mass media and offers a critical account of media-entertainment interrelationships that can usefully inform the broad contexts within which entertainment managers operate. The chapter outlines definitions of mass media and new media, and assesses changes and continuities between and across these to highlight some of the key ways in which mass media are theorized and explained. An extended case study of the Olympics provides an illustration of change and continuity and of competing views on the role and purpose of mass media.
