Some of the difficulty in establishing how philosophy and philology are related in Vico?s theory of hermeneutics arises from the fact that he vacilated between two different views about their relationship, resulting in two different conceptions of the relationship between metaphysics and hermeneutics: between metaphysical hermeneutics (more pronounced in SNP) and hermeneutical metaphysics (more pronounced in SNS). The former, according to Vico?s wish to produce an art of diagnosis, makes interpretation dependent upon metaphysics, which is unacceptable nowadays. The latter involves a much more complex relationship between interpretation and metaphysics and offers us a viable method of hermeneutical enquiry with philosophical significance at the present time.
