Abstract
The use of solar energy in the southern states is discussed and the programs of the Southern Solar Energy Center (SSEC) are reviewed. About 44% of the new single-family house construction in the country is in the south and programs are being directed toward energy conservation in house construction, passive solar energy components, and retrofit applications. Solar water heating is already a viable industry in the south. The more efficient use of wood redidues is recommended. Solar cooling is still not considered economically feasible at this point.
