The Council of State in Politics

Throughout its history, the Council of State has always played a political role, contributing to the diffusion of certain values or arbitrating certain political conflicts with contentious consequences. In the 1980s, in the context of alternating governments, the politicization of the Council of State was sometimes vigorously criticized. Today, these accusations have disappeared and the decisions of the Council of State are perceived as less political. However, one can surmise that the political choices of the Council of State have not disappeared, but that they have become less visible given the dominant consensus.
