Abstract

The system of real numbers has evolved as a result of a process of successive extensions of the system of natural numbers (i.e., the positive whole numbers). We shall denote by ℕ, ℤ, ℚ, ℝ and ℂ, respectively, the sets of natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, real numbers and complex numbers. The sets ℚ, ℝ and ℂ form a field with respect to the usual operations of addition and multiplication.
