Analysis Of Flouting MaximFound In “Maleficent” Movie ScriptWritten By Robert Stormberg

Communication is a main part of the society. A good communication is needed for everyone in interaction with others in order to communicate well and effectively. To communicate with each other, we need language. Language will help us to express that we feel, need, and want. Sometimes, in communication, there happen some misunderstanding. The study about realationship between language and context is called pragmatics. In pragmatics, we learnt about conversational analysis which has a part called cooperative principle that governs the use of language. This part has its own aspects that are called maxim, the element that we can use in analyzing a piece of word or sentence. The flouting maxim are important to be learnt by human in the communication, in order to be received easily by the hearer, every utterance has to be relevant in context, it has also to be brief and understandable. The objectives of the research are as follow: (i) To find out the types of flouting maxim used by the characters in Maleficent movie script. (ii) To find out the implied meanings of the flouting maxim in Maleficent movie script. The design of the research is descriptive qualitative. The data in this research are utterances found in the movie. Meanwhile, the data source is movie script entitled “Maleficent” by Robert Stromberg. The result of this research: (i) There are 45 utterances which contain flouting maxims such as flouting maxim of quantity (18), flouting maxim of quality (15), flouting maxim of relation (9), flouting maxim of manner (3). (ii) There are some implied meanings in each flouting maxim that are vary. Based on the result of the research above, the teacher can use the research as material in studying maxim, especially in understanding utterances which belong to flouting maxim. For the students, especially the sudents of English Education Department who have studied pragmatic, especially maxims and flouting maxims, the research can be used as one of reference in studying the materials. For further researchers who are interested in investigating maxims, especially flouting maxims, it can be used as a reference in conducting other related researches.
