Spectroscopic study of Me(CO)6 (Me = Cr, Mo, W) metal carbonyls adsorbed on MgO and of their metallic derivatives obtained by decarbonylation in vacuo

Abstract

Me(CO)6 carbonyls interact with surface coordinatively unsaturated (cus) Mg2+O2— pairs of totally dehydrated MgO, leading to anchored mononuclear species with (CO)5 Me(CO2)2— Mg2+ structure. Progressive decarboxylation of the anchored metal carbonyls produces first low nuclearity carbonyl clusters and metal particles. Low nuclearity clusters are anchored to surface O2— c.u.s. ions and can absorb CO to give back the mononuclear fully carbonylated complexes in (CO) 5 Me (CO2)2— Mg2+.
