Abstract

This chapter concerns the exposure of workers in an occupational environment. It helps readers to understand the practical relevance of the exposure limits system. Workers are normally protected from the risk of exposure from static fields to electromagnetic radiation of infinite frequencies. The Optical Radiation Directive takes into account only artificial optical radiation. Employers are obliged to protect their employees from risks due to physical agents, as cited in Framework Directive 89/391/CEE. The electromagnetic field (EMF) Directive covers known direct and indirect effects that may be caused by EMF from 0 Hz to 300 GHz. The chapter introduces the implementation of the directive within a company, which divided into various phases. The directive offers the possibility of an incremental approach to risk assessment. The measures must be based on the general risk prevention principles outlined in the Framework Directive.
