Abstract
Background : There was an increasing trend of pregnancy after the age of 35 years, which was medically considered as elderly pregnancy that constituted a risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes affecting both the pregnant women and fetuses. Objective : To investigate adverse pregnancy outcomes among elderly pregnant women seeking services at Nangrong Hospital, Buriram Province. Methodology : This research was a retrospective descriptive study that collected data from medical records available in the database of HOSxp system and from the childbirth records of pregnant women and newborns in Nangrong Hospital from October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015. Results : Comparison between the adverse outcomes of pregnancy and childbirth among adult pregnancy and those of elderly pregnancy showed that the incidences of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), gestational diabetes mellitus – Class A1 (GDM A1), gestational diabetes mellitus – Class A2 (GDM A2), Cesarean section, and malpresentation of the fetus were significantly different (p<0.001). Also, the comparison between the adverse outcomes manifested in the newborns of adult pregnancy and those in the newborns of elderly pregnancy showed that the incidence of 1 - minute Apgar score less than seven (<7) were significantly different (p<0.05). Conclusions: Elderly pregnancy constituted obstetric risk factors, the risks of adverse effects during the course of pregnancy and childbirth, and the risks of adverse outcomes in newborns.
