Abstract

Colicins and microcins are antibacterial toxins produced by Escherichia coli and related species or genera of Enterobacteriaceae. The basic characteristics and classification of colicins were described. Possibilities of determination are not only microbiological but also by methods of molecular biology - the most common is PCR. The aim of this study was to apply the system of colicin determination (21 colicins and 3 microcins) on the collection of colicinogenic Escherichia coli strains isolated from poultry and pheasants. It was found 13 colicinogenic producers, which were found to produce 8 types of colicins and 2 types of microcins. Two strains produced only one bacteriocin, the remaining strains at least two or more bacteriocins. Colicins B, M, Ia and Ib, and microcins B17 and V were found the most frequently.
