Although there is an increasing awareness of psychiatric disorders in primary care, many of these conditions remain underdiagnosed
and under-treated. Depression in particular, remains significantly unidentified in primary practice. This article aims
to stipulate the crucial role the primary healthcare professional plays in the diagnosis and treatment of depression and anxiety
in South Africa.
