Abstract
This conference proceedings, which consists of 25 papers presented at the National Conference on Affordable Housing held in Miami, Florida on December 6-8, 1989, discusses ways that the civil engineer might be the catalyst to implementing changes in both policy and building design which would improve housing affordability. Some of the topics included are: how to engineer affordable housing; housing needs in developing countries; and land use planning and traffic; lower cost structural techniques; the use of automation and innovative design techniques; and life cycle cost of energy. This proceeding presents a variety of methods the civil engineer can use to help the world toward the universal goal of affordable housing.
